Who is Sandy Lam?

Sandy Live 2007
In the Chinese pop music scene in Asia, especially to those who used to listening to radio from mid-80s and on in Hong Kong, SANDY LAM is a name equivalent to perfection, hard working, feminine, talent, and a gay icon.
Her career began as a part-time DJ at Commercial Radio Hong Kong in 1982, in which she got an unique nick name 611 (6+1+1=8, in Cantonese ‘8′ means being talkative and always questioning about gossips and other topics). yet “talkative” has never been the right word to describe Sandy; in fact, she is more a quiet person. Sandy became a full-time DJ not long afterwards, and joined SONY in 1983. Her Cantonese debut “林憶蓮 Lin Yik Lin” (her Chinese name) was released in 1984. She rapidly became one of the most popular up-and-raising star. “憶蓮 Yik Lin“, her third album released in 1987, reached double platinum and that was when her music career truly kicked off. Sandy received her first award at year, her first taste of success.
Many can recalled Sandy’s cheesy Japanese teen pop image from her first two albums, but with heavy influences from Western music, Sandy, be true to herself, quickly re-established her styles into R&B, Soul, and Light Jazz. In fact, she was and still is the only Hong Kong female singer with the best ad-libs. Her fifth studio album “Ready” (1988) was one of the very first Cantonese release with light Jazz and Blues materials. This was her last album from SONY and signed another international label WEA (Warner Music). Under WEA, Sandy released her mega hot “City Rhythm” trilogy, marked the first and last successful trilogy in Cantonese music history. “都市觸覺 City Rhythm I” (1988), “逃離鋼筋森林 City Rhythm II: Fuir La Cite” (1989), and “City Rhythm III: Faces & Places” (1990) pushed Sandy’s career into another level, which also created her classic “city girl” image along with the ever blooming Hong Kong back in the 80s. She was considered the representation the woman of the time – strong, independent and modern.
Sandy continued to explore her music with no boundary, working musicians from Taiwan and Singapore. She was the first Hong Kong singer successfully make a huge impact in Taiwan by her first Mandarin release, “愛上一個不回家的人 Home Without You” (1990) selling a record of 600,000 copies back then. Soon afterwards Sandy released two new Cantonese album “夢了瘋了倦了 Drifting” (1991) and “野花 Wildflower” (1991), both were co-operations with Singapore singer/producer Dick Lee. As Sandy mentioned “夢了瘋了倦了 Drifting” (1991) was her most personal album to date, while “野花 Wildflower” (1991) was her most aggressive album ever with heavy East meets West music style throughout. Although “野花 Wildflower” (1991) was criticized as too deep and too difficult to digest for the mass market, but it received high praise from critics and become one of the top 10 best Cantonese album of the 90s. Critics said it was a great original concept album that we can put it on the international CD shelves overseas and we can be proud of it.
Facing hard criticism from Hong Kong, Sandy moved on to a bigger market – Taiwan. Sandy signed the biggest Taiwan label, Rock Records, back in the time, and from there she further captured many people’s hearts with her music. Both of her Mandarin release “Love, Sandy” (1995) and “夜太黑 Night Is Too Dark” (1996) sold over million copies Asia wide, these albums also helped her to open new markets in Singapore, Malaysia and China. While her peers were busy or stuck in Hong Kong market, Sandy traveled all over Asia, and most importantly she lived in Japan and released two Japanese record “Simple” (1994) and “Open Up” (1995). Sandy released another Cantonese album “感覺完美 Feeling Perfect” in 1996 and left the Cantonese music scene since then until 2005. To date, Sandy has 29 full studio albums in Cantonese, Mandarin, English and Japanese, adding other EPs, live recordings, compilations and co-operations, there would be 80 plus recordings on the list.
Unlike many other singers in Hong Kong, audience recognizes Sandy as a true musician/performer, rather then an entertainer. You don’t find shocking make-up or extreme outfits from her; it is her pure voice which captured everyone’s heart. She rather spends her time work producing an album instead of attending meaningless shows. Her fans admire her as who she is and the willingness to improve herself vocally, and such improvement is well-know in the industry like a miracle. In recent years, she is transforming herself, not only a singer, but singer songwriter. To put it in a simple way, Sandy is serious about music, music is her life.
2005 marks the 20th Anniversary of her music career. Sandy came back to Hong Kong, and hosted a brand new concert along with a brand new Cantonese album “本色 S/L” (2005), which was her first Cantonese release in 9 years. Being able to survive this long in Hong Kong entertainment scene is not an easy task, because of the high competition and people are being so forgetful. Looking back, it shouldn’t be a surprise after all, Sandy is the very first singer to blend in R&B & Jazz elements into Chinese music; she is one of the pioneers who marches into the Japanese music scene and the first singer to have two Chinese songs (from album “野花 Wildflower”) entering the Japan J-Wave Tokio Hot 100 Music Chart.
Moreover, Sandy also participated in Asia’s first sold out Chinese musical “Snow Wolf Lake” for a record 47 days; she was hand picked by Andrew Lloyd Webber to perform in The Music Of Andrew Lloyd Webber with Elaine Paige in Shanghai in 2001, and she was also picked to sing the Chinese version of Les Miserables’s theme song On My Own. A new kind of flower in Singapore is named after her name called Dendrobium Sandy. The list goes on and on, but most of her, it is her music that put us together. Let’s hope Sandy is going to continue to sing for the years to come.
In 2007, Sandy held a ground breaking concert in Hong Kong, a concert that contained mostly side tracks from her albums. This concert asked for a record high ticket price at HK$680, a record for a Hong Kong artist. Sandy’s goal was to bring back real music to Hong Kong audiences, no invited guest, no firework display, no dancers, but Sandy and her band on stage. Sandy invited Japanese technicians, who worked with Japanese musician Utada Hikaru, to set up the stage, lightings, and sound. Famous Japanese visual artist Takagi Masakatsu 高木正勝 also created a visual effects for Sandy. Sandy is scheduled to release a brand new Mandarin record in year 2008.
