Sandy talked about music in the interview, she said she listened to alternative and electronic music these days. (Woohoo me too!) She mentioned the Dixie Chicks, KT Tunstall, and Madonna.

The Dixie Chicks are a country/rock trio from the states. They received massive success with their country/pop album “Fly” in late 1990s. Until 2003, when the lead vocalist Natalie Maines publicly criticized US President George Bush about the Iraq invasion, it received huge criticizing from throughout the nation and cost the group half of their audience attendance in the states that year. In 2006, they released their 7th studio album “Taking the Long Way”, although the album soar on the chart but they failed to attract audience to their concert. The album, however, was well received by the critics winning all five categories for which they were nominated, including the coveted Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year.

The documentary “Shut up and Sing” was released in 2006, but the ads were turned down by various stations deal to itspublic controversy as they call it. “It’s a sad commentary about the level of fear in our society that a movie about a group of courageous entertainers who were blacklisted for exercising their right of free speech is now itself being blacklisted by corporate America,” the film’s producer Harvey Weinstein said in a statement.

I am not a huge country fans, but this album, especially the song “Not Ready to Make Nice”, was beautifully produced. I respect them as they stand true on what they believe in. It needs guts. In the May 29 issue of Time, Maguire said, “I’d rather have a smaller following of really cool people who get it, who will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith. We don’t want those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do.” Maines also retracted her earlier apology to Bush, stating, “I apologized for disrespecting the office of the President, but I don’t feel that way anymore. I don’t feel he is owed any respect whatsoever.” This instance, like Sandy said, is inspiring.

KT Tunstall, now a hugly popular alternative female rock star, is actually half Chinese, half Irish! Her official debut Eye to the Telescope (2005) made it to the states by its first hit single “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree”, especially after American Idol runner up Katharine Mcphee sang that song on the show! KT Tunstall became a household name overnight. KT is an artist you have to see her singing live, it’s so much more fun! As she always said in the interviews, performing live is the best, the studio is somehow so trapped! Doesn’t it reflect Sandy’s psychology these days?

As of Madonna, what more can I say? Seeing is believing.
