EMIL CHAU AND JONATHAN LEE CONCERT 2005
Singapore Indoor Stadium
It was meant to be a joint concert between two men. In the end, it was a woman who was not there who almost stole the show. Longtime pals Jonathan Lee and Emil Chau performed to a sell-out crowd at the Singapore Indoor Stadium last Saturday night, captivating fans with almost 40 songs over three hours.
But it was Lee’s ex-wife, Hong Kong singer Sandy Lam, who made her presence felt throughout the gig – even though her name was not mentioned at all. There was no need to.
The Taiwanese songwriter, who ended his six-year marriage with Lam last July, has written many love ballads for her, some of which were showcased during the show.
One of the songs, I Endured The Cold Wind For You, was performed by Chau, 44, with startling sensitivity and emotions. Lee, 46, sung another number, Jeff Chang’s I Really Love You, during his 40-minute solo set.
With a tender look on his face, Lee said: ‘I wrote this song in 1992. At that time, I had found my true love, but I couldn’t let other people know. ‘So I made someone else sing it.’ It was obvious whom his ‘true love’ was.
The sentimental Lee was also near tears when belting out his compositions The Price Of Love and I’m A Little Bird.
Melancholic moments aside, the gig was a genuine treat for fans who have followed both men’s music careers over the last 20 years.
There were no backup dancers, flamboyant costumes or pyrotechnics. Instead, it was a simple fare of musical gems presented in a raw and honest manner. In fact, it was the kind of evening which leaves you with a warm feeling inside, just like enjoying a cup of teh-C with an old friend in an unpretentious kopitiam.
Chau, who was born in Hong Kong but is based in Taiwan, was clearly the one most had come to see, judging by the warm applause and cheers which greeted the crooner whenever he was on stage. He returned their affections with his usual charm and wit, delivering signature tunes such as I’m Marrying You Tomorrow and Sad Song with gusto despite nursing a flu.
While Lee moved everyone with his heartwrenching songs, Chau provided the spark that turned the night into an unforgettable experience. Even Mrs Goh Chok Tong, who was seated in the front row, was singing along to Chau’s hit, Friends, at the end of the show.
